Performance Enhancements in CR XIR2 and/or CR 2008

I have a client who currently develops reports in CR 8.5 and distributes them in their application using CR XIR1 runtime files. They have complained about performance and besides asking the normal questions about indexes and so forth, I suggested upgrading the reports to the latest or at least a supported version of Crystal Reports design. They countered with the question of whether there is anything specific in the upgrades that would improve performance.

I am sure the answer is yes, but I have not read the readme files in itemized detail. I know the new wired ODBC drivers can improve data connectivity performance, but I was wondering if there was in fact anything I could point to in an upgrade or service pack that would generally improve performance.

Who thinks the client is looking for something specific they can point to in order to justify forcing their customers, who can be entrenched in the current configuration, to upgrade their installations...

    Hi Fuskie,

I doubt you'll find anything specific but the big issue is the reports in 8.5 are not in UNICODE format or the updated CR 9 + format so when opening the reports the engine has to upgrade them on the fly. That can take time. It also has to convert the existing connection to CR XI format.

As for connectivity, native is always the best, ODBC is another layer to go through and the Wired drivers just have a native client built into those drivers.

If they can use the native driver, if their DB doesn't have one or we don't the OLE DB is likely better than ODBC.

Get them to test it by downloading CR XI R2 Trial version and update their runtime also.

    Thank you

    Don

Thanks. I think those two items will go a long way towards justifying an upgraded report design (and thus my worth as a developer).
