Can I capitalize assets that are already partly depreciated

We are already using SBO for a while but want to start using Fixed Assets. Thus, we have existing assets that are already partly depreciated but not yet depreciated and capitalized in the system. Can I capitalize them somehow in the system and then depreciate them for the remaining month? I looked at the capitalization document in SBO but it doesn't allow to enter an asset date in a period before today. Any suggestions?

When I recently capitalized a ton of assets for a customer I loaded the assets in OITM, then ran capitalization and reversed the journal entries in the periods that they were created. I did have to have fiscal years back to the earliest capitalization and then run the fiscal year change. I ran depreciation for the current fiscal year up to the date of conversion and reversed those journal entries. We were very close to the Accumulated depreciation balance, so the customer could live with the adjustment. Now they can process normally in SAP (if you consider SAP normal)...

Hi Peter le Grand

You can Capitalize the same by using Capitalization option in SAP. You need to specify Remaining Useful Life (Months) while creating the Fixed asset master data.

Hi Dinesh,

Thanks for the message. I tried it but get the following error:

"the depreciation start date of asset for depreciation area cannot be in the import fiscal year". I used exactly the same excel structure as you did. Saved it as a tab delimited text file. Put the dates as yyyymmdd. Tried various things with the date and also updated the year in the menu:

Financials > fixed assets > Fiscal Year Change.

I searched a lot on this error message and many people have the same. I am running by the way on 9.2 on Hana.

Any other suggestions?

Dear Peter,

Use the Data import feature in SAP business one, This will allow you to enter the Capitalization amount and purchase date, Useful life and remaining life.

Administration - Data Import/Export - Import Fixed Asset from Excel.

Prepare your template as mentioned in the excel below as well as prepare your Data import

excel and convert it into text file and upload using this feature.

Refer with the attached excel. 😊

Thanks
