Hi guys,
Just wanted to ask if you guys know how to setup the DATA authorization in Microsoft POWER BI if it is connected to SAP BW Query as its source of data?
In SAP BW, we already have authorization in RSECADMIN. How will it reflect when running the POWERBI using the BW query?
Thank you.
Loed
Hi, if you have set-up Analysis Authorizations in SAP BW and you wish to reflect the row-level security in PowerBI, there are a couple of things to consider:
1. You must use “Direct Query” connections as “Import” connections will transfer the Data to PowerBI and you will lose your BW Authorization restrictions once the Data resides in Power BI.
2. A User-Mapping between PowerBI users and SAP BW users must be implemented, so each Power BI is associated to a specific BW user with corresponding BW authorizations. This means you must implement a Single Sign-On (SSO) mechanism between both systems.
3. As far as I am aware of at this time, to setup SSO between PowerBI and SAP BW, you must configure SNC (Secure Network Connection) in SAP BW to allow Single Sign-On (SSO) vía Windows Active Directory. Besides customizing settings in BW and Active Directory, this requires you to install SAP Secure Login Client (SLC) on your Power BI Gateway Server machine and/or the client PC running Power BI Desktop.
We researched this topic and this is what we came across. As you may have seen, without a SSO mechanism, the SAP BW User and Password will be fixed and hard-coded on the Power BI connection, limiting the possibility of using user-specific BW authorizations (unless you create a connection for each user which is not feasible)
Hope this helps
Good luck!

Hi Loed,
in addition to the previous answers regarding the authentication and users, also have a look to the SAP Community Wiki: MDX and BW authorizations. If I remember correctly Power BI uses the MDX interface.
Cheers,
Nora

I would search the MSFT forums for this - I did a quick search and found this: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/desktop-sap-bw-connector
