Dell Server, Production - Error

We have a problem on Production Instance. Dell Server is R900, having SAS Hard disks.

OS : Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise 64 Bit

DB : Oracle 10g

Raid 5 on DB HDDs

Raid 1 on OS

It was running perfectly for last 2 years but suddenly today we got an error signal in the server LCD. the error was

CPU1 IERR E1410

We contacted the Hardware vendor and they told us to update the BIOS and Perc 6 i Firmwares. BIOS Firmware was updated by us, but we are worried about updating Perc 6 i firmware that it may cause further problems to the partitions and data on the disks.

Has anyone encountered such problem?

Is it safe to update the Perc 6/i firmware without any loss of data/sap instance?

We have the online backup on a tape library.

Hi,

As per my best knowledge, if you update the firmware it will not affect the data which is on the hard disk.

It may be possible that if something goes wrong, you will not be able to access the disk. But it doesn't mean that you have lost the data.

If I understand correctly you are talking about the updating controllers firmware... if this is the case, your controller will not work as expected, but your hard disk and data will remain healthy..

Still if is advisable to make sure about all things with hardware vendor before doing any changes.

AND MOST IMPORTANT, TAKE COMPLETE BACKUP BEFORE SUCH ACTIVITY... OFFLINE BACKUP IS RECOMMEDED IF POSSIBLE...

Thank you, we had already done that. Complete Offline Backup was taken and then the PERC 6/i firmware update was applied. System running smoothly now.
