Installation NW 7.01 developer: DNS domain name for sap system ??

Hello,

if I try to install the monster NW 7.01 dev edition, what should I enter for DNS domain name?

What is the installation program checking: a running DNS server?

Whatever I do, I will always get the error that the domain name cannot be resolved.

if host is goodhost and domain is "localdomain", what is to be entered in this field?

Goodhost is mapped to real IP (within file hosts).

Hi,

You need to add server host entry in your network DNS server.

Also put this entry in your servers host file. (/etc/hosts or c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts)

For exmple:

192.168.1.10       hostname      hostname.domain.com

If don't have DNS server in place on your network, then on client system you need to add above entry to resolve the FQDN hostname.

Use above "hostname.domain.com" FQDN in your Netweaver (Webdynpro) configurations.

It will solve your problem.

Hello,

My current IP: 192.168.178.129

Hostname: goodhost

I will use the following domain: goodhost.nw70.de

So, I entered the following entry in hosts:

192.168.178.129 goodhost goodhost.nw70.de

I can ping goodhost.nw70.de and get the IP 192.168.178.129.

But again: within the installation of NW70, I get now the error if I enter "nw70.de":

reverse lookup of address -64.-88.-78.129

By the way: to enter "goodhost.nw70.de" will be denied by error message:

"goodhost.goodhost.nw70.de"

--> so your statement is wrong. The "DNS Domain name for SAP" is always the part without the hostname in front.

I would say the installtion program is a big bug, nothing else.

I have setup DNS server now, entered forward and reverse lookup zone for 192.168.178.xxx

But it doesn't change anything. The stupid installation routine is still displaying the reverse lookup error.

Any further idea? I still get no step-by-step instruction by anone of here how they made the thing running.

So, please give me just your step-by-step values in "DNS domain for SAP", hosts file etc..

Hostname: goodhost

It is Ok !...

I will use the following domain: goodhost.nw70.de

You should have use domain name as "nw70.de" only.

In short your domainname will be "nw70.de" and hostname will be "goodhost". So FQDN will be "goodhost.nw70.de".

FQDN=hostname+domain name.

Thats why you are getting "goodhost.goodhost.nw70.de"

goodhost in goodhost.nw70.de can represent hostname or child domain, so should not be the same.

By the way, what is your OS ?

You can try below entries in your host file.

192.168.178.129     nw70.de
192.168.178.129     goodhost.nw70.de      goodhost
OR
192.168.178.129     goodhost      goodhost.nw70.de

(if you don't want to point nw70.de to 192.168.178.129, then remove first entry)

In NW70 webdynpro configration, provide FQDN as "goodhost.nw70.de".

Again, if you are using OTHER DNS server, then make sure that all form of name resolution is working. Test the below ping replies from your netweaver system and client also.

ping goodhost.nw70.de   ----> (it should return your Netweaver system IP Address)
ping goodhost  ----> (it should return your Netweaver system IP Address)
ping nw70.de   ----> (it should return your DNS domain system IP Address)

and

nslookup goodhost.nw70.de

It will work...

Reverse lookup is not necessary as many administrators avoids using reverse lookup zone for security reason.

I configured hosts as follows:

192.168.178.129 nw70.de

192.168.178.129 goodhost goodhost.nw70.de

I checked now ping:

ping goodhost --> returns 192.168.178.129

ping nw70.de --> returns 192.168.178.129

ping goodhost.nw70.de --> returns 192.168.178.129

Within Installation setup for DNS domain for SAP system, I entered: "nw70.de" as you suggested.

I still get the error message "reverse lookup of address -64.-88.-78.129 failed"

I'm using Win2003 server (enterprise edition) with SP2, firewall is deactivated, no DNS server active (services stopped for DNS server).

I have checked the following alternative in hosts:

192.168.178.129 nw70.de

192.168.178.129 goodhost.nw70.de goodhost

--> reverse lookup error is coming

I even checked the following version of hosts:

192.168.178.129 nw70.de

192.168.178.129 goodhost goodhost.nw70.de

192.168.178.129 goodhost.nw70.de goodhost

--> reverse lookup error is coming

As a test, I deleted the entries in hosts, I will get another error message (which is obviously) that goodhosts cannot be resolved. So the changes on hosts will be active during installtion but as already told above, the reverse lookup error is coming. What other error is still there?

Furthermore, one important question:

during download, there were two rar files to be downloaded for NW 7.0 SR1 DEveloper Edition.

I have unzipped the first one and then the second rar file into the same directory with overwriting of files eventually existing before. Is this correct? Or did I already made an error and should I use the second rar file? If I should use the second rar file as well, should I unzip into a different folder (and not the same like first rar file)?

Hi Stephan,

If you are getting this error at the time of installation, It is actually required Windows Domain.

So, the system on which you are installing NW must be a member of Windows Domain.

Or you can try one thing, Just configure DNS Service on your NW host (If you dont have seperate DNS or Active Directory server on your network) and configure Forward and Reverse Lookup Zone.

Your forward lookup zone will be "nw70.de" and Reverse Lookup zone will be 178.168.192.in-arpa.

In Forward Lookup zone create host entry (A Record) as "goodhost.nw70.de" and Add pointer to this Host record in Reverse lookup zone.

You can search google for how to configure DNS in Windows 2003.

Once DNS is configured, assign Local DNS server in "Preferred DNS server" properties in your network configuration.

Then again check the name resolution same as before and retry the installation.

It will definately help you...

the MS lookpack is not working. 10.10.0.10 is not working as mentioned in the document.

Are you trying to disable other VIRTUAL net cards after installing MS loopback and use procedure as in the guide ?

I think I can answer your question about the download files...

The two files are actually part of the same package (they are Part1 and Part 2) Both of these files are part of ONE larger rar archive.

I recommend using WINRAR (search for this utility on google) to extract the files.

You don't need to extract the files from each part seperately. Make sure you have both parts in the same location when you open the first part.

I recommend you copy all the extracted folders to a DVD-R and then install from there.

My PC it's not a part of any domain, just a workgroup, what should i put on the DNS domain name?, i've tried with 10.10.0.10, the pc name, and i always get the same error. "Cannot resolve host 'PC-Name.10.10.0.10' by name". What can i do?, thanks a lot.

Hello,

I had already added the DNS server into the list of preferred DNS, but the installation is stilling hanging on resolution of FQDN.

In the meantime, I have setup a complete new installation and I used 10.10.0.10 as IP address (without usage of Microsoft Loopback adapter). I also changed the IP address 10.10.0.10 within file "hosts".

Now, everything is working. I'm a bit surprised because it looks like that the NW trial version is maybe related to IP address 10.10.0.10 and maybe fail with other IP addresses? I assume it will work with other IP addresses as well.

Nethertheless, as a result: IP address 10.10.0.10 will work on my virtual machine now.

Hi

ipconfig tells me that win ip configuration:

host name: goodhost

dns suffix search list: localdomain

ethernet adapter lan 1:

connection-specific dns suffix: localdomain

dns and dhcp server are given.

I'm using vmware with host-only, therefore

goodhost is runnung within vmware. I can ping and

connect from host computer to goodhost.

I don't know which dns name thw installation

routine is asking for. The dns server on etherneadapter 1

is currently not reachable. Is this the error?

Only to enter goodhost is wrong. Will be denied

with error message not valud input. To enter

localdomain is again wrong. Same error message.

Any idea? Who has used vmware? What network

settings are correct and which dns domain

is to be given?

Try enter ip address or goodhost.localdomain.

To troubleshoot: what do you get if ping goodhost?

Also add one entry: goodhost <ip address> in hosts file, this is to make sure you have the right name resolution for goodhost.

Hi

if I enter goodhost with ping, it can be resolved (IP address is coming back) due to settings in file hosts.

Again, I cannot only enter the IP nor localdomain nor goodhost alone.

This stupid routine is automaically adding goodhost in front of what I'm entering.

My curent IP is: 192.168.178.128

If I enter 192.168.178.128.localdomain or goodhost.localdomain, the error message is coming back:

Cannot resolve host goodhost.192.168.178.128.localdomain by name

resp.

Cannot resolve host goodhost.goodhost.localdomain by name

If I uncheck now the feature FQDN, can I set the correct DNS name later on?

Is this feature only setting the parameter SAPLOCAHOSTFULL or does it more than this?

My only target is to use this for training purposes of WebDynpro.

I believe my issue is related to the problem that "nslookup goodhost" is not responding, furthermore an error message is coming up. I have no DNS server running to resolve this name. Where can I put this information? Do I need it for my real problem of having FQDN ?

Put your IP and host name in host file entry(Start>>RUN>>Drivers>>etc>>host file)..

Please use NW 7.01 dev edition installation guide for DSN and FQDN.

besides the fact thatn the guide is related to NW CE version instead of Trial 7.0 for web dynpro training, the MS lookpack is not working. 10.10.0.10 is not working as mentioned in the document.

So, I need a fully working example of someone.

I'm using VMware workstation, Win2003 32bit. If you have an example with Vista 32bit or WinXP, fine. This is good as well.

I need hosts file example and what has to be entered in the DNS domain field during installation.

How have you installed your NW 7.0 version??

Hello my friend

Run ipconfig/all or nslookup, you'll find the full suffix. If this is a localhost not a domain member server, just give the local hostname it should be fine.
