EHP1 upgrade of BI before EHP4 upgrade of ECC

Hello,

We have the following systems:

ECC on 7.0 SP12

BI on 7.0 SP12

Portal (recently updated to 7.01 SP06)

We plan to update our BI systems to 7.0 EHP1 SP06 before updating ECC to EHP4 for ERP. The plan is to update Dev, QA and Prod of BI to EHP1 SP06. And once this is done and tested, we plan to proceed with updating Dev, QA and Prod of ECC to EHP4. Do you see any issue in proceeding with this?

Is this the right way to do it, or should we update both BI and ECC together? or ECC first and then BI?

Please let me know how to proceed, your help is highly appreciated.

Hi,

I will suggest you to do the upgrade of BI and ECC in parallel or first upgrade ECC and then BI.

Because when you will upgrade BI and then do the testing then sometimes some report which pull data from ECC shows error of version mismatch as basis, abap etc. components in BI will be on 7.01 where in ECC it will be on 700. So, first upgrade ECC and then BI.

Hi Sunny,

What if we proceed as you say, ECC gets upgraded to 7.01. Won't the same report trying to pull data from ECC cause an error since BI is on 7.00 whereas ECC is on 7.01?

Dear Ajay,

Why I suggested you this approach is because when you will upgrade your ECC system then you will not do BI specific testing so there will be no problem in Testing part and it will go successful. But on BI part, if you upgrade it first then BI functional team will first check all this reporting which will pull data from ECC then it will create problem in your testing and testing team has to wait until ECC will not be upgraded successfully.

We also like to upgrade our systems to netweaver 7.0 Ehp1 SP06.

Do you face any issues in Portal after upgrading to 7.01 SP06.??

Hi Veera,

Patching portal to 7.01 SP06 was very easy. We made sure that we upgraded it to SPS17 first and then used the EHPI to install the EHP1.

Post patching, we had to redeploy our login page, as this had got updated. Also checked our ADS connection.

But the biggest concern was BI. I will always recommend you to patch BI and Portal (which is your BI-Java) together. Otherwise all your BI reports will fail, and you will have to make changes to the individual report iviews, as in our case. All ESS and MSS are working, even though our ECC is still on 7.0. We plan to upgrade ECC next.

I can't think of any other issues we faced with Portal patching.
