Can i be a project manager without R/3 experience?

Dear Experts,

I do not have real R/3 functional experience although i have taken a course on a small module of CO.

I have many years of BW experience (mainly technical development) and Basis (many years) but not R/3.

My question is , does it mean i can not succeed as project manager for R/3 project?

On the 1 hand, by definition a project manager need not know how to do the consultant's work ( i know 1st hand of big consulting firms with such SAP project managers).

But on the other hand its logical to feel that functional knowledge is benefitial to have.

So, i seriously like to get some comments and advice from you the Experts.

Thanks for reading.

sincerely

John
