XI uses SOAP-XML, XI adds envelope element to XML message to make it SOAP-XML, it binds with HTTP post request, this is the message format of XI.

XI requires as input a SOAP - XML message ( This is nothing but a SOAP message with SOAP header and SOAP body where in the SOAP body is nothing but our actual input xml ).
So XI needs a specific SOAP xml to operate .
That is why we require adapters to conver the source format into SOAP-xml
