Capacity Check when creating Sales Orders - MTO

Folks,

There are work centers on which capacity is a problem all the time. Now, while entering Sales Orders how can we check Capacity situation on the work centers, for the given date (customer requested date), before the Customer Service Rep sends an acknowledgment back to the Customer saying Yes your "request date" can be met?

These are purely Make-to-Order materials I'm talking about. I'm thinking we can create a Production Order directly when the Sales Order is saved, which will check the capacity, warn us of Capacity shortage & there by allowing us to take necessary action. But the problem is, this will happen when the Cust Rep is entering the Order & for capacity purposes, Planner has to intervene.

how can i address this?

cheers

Andy,

Assemble to Order Strategy 82 automatically creates a production order for Finished Goods upon entry of the sales order. Planning does not necessarily have to be involved. The production order can create cap requirements upon save, which could be reviewed quickly to see how it would fit into the existing capacity load, before sending the final confirmation to the customer.

A variation of this is Strategy 81, in which a planned order is created instead of a production order. The planned order can create cap requirements, but is not quite so 'final' as a production order. In this case, Planning usually fine tunes the scheduling of the planned order, and then converts to a production order when the time is right.

If you wish for your Sales people to be able to understand and manage capacity intelligently, you obviously have to perform some training. My personal experience with Sales is that they are generally unwilling or unable to pay attention to capacity with the same diligence that Planning does.

Thanks for ur reply. My need is that the system should trigger a warning/information message when the system branches to the Production Order (Strategy 82), if there is a capacity overload on that work center. How can I set this up? I've seen in the past "warning/information message" pop up when capacity overload existed.

Thanks

Andy,

I am not aware of any standard way to perform a capacity availability check 'automatically' when creating an order. You can automatically schedule the order, and you can automatically generate cap requirements. However, to check the requirements of your order against available capacity requires manual intervention, to the best of my knowledge.

Capacity levelling can mass check capacity and 'fit' the orders into a feasible capacity plan.

There are some userexits within the production order creation/change/save routines. There may be some opportunity in creaing some custom code. Consult with your ABAPers if you wish to pursue this path.

This functionality (check Cap availability on creation) does exist in APO. This is another path you could take, and is the one currently being pushed by SAP. CTP and MLTP are the APO Sales order ATPchecks that can immediately confirm Sales orders based on, in whole or in part, available capacity.

Sorry I don't have the answer your were looking for.
