Upgrade steps - SPDD and SPAU

Hello,

I've been reading about the upgrade steps and I found out that SPDD and SPAU are major parts of the upgrade procedure.

However, I dont understand one part:

In some places, it is said that SPDD can be performed before the upgrade, in other places it is said that SPDD is performed after the upgrade, followed by SPAU.

To my understanding, SPDD shiould be used to approve object modifications that were once performed to the new system.

If the new system (Say ECC6 ) is not installed, there is nothing to compare it to.

On the other hand, I should be able to forsee these steps before a system upgrade right?

Is there correct procedure a remote system comparison between a trial system (say upgraded to ecc6), and the old system (Say ECC 5)?

Thanks for any information in advance,

Eli.

Hi,

SPDD and SPAU will come in upgrade when you have modified standard SAP objects and program.

During upgrade, ACT_UPG phase will come, where you have to perform the SPDD adjustment and if you will not do the adjustment in the phase, then SAP will reset all objects as per SAP new objects and the data will be lost respective to those objects. So, you should do the SPDD adjustment in this phase. also, when you are doing SPDD in this phase, then don't forget to mark these objects in transport so that later on your next system, you need not to do SPDD again manually, inspite you can use same transport request which upgrade will automatically add in umod file at OS level.

While SPAU you can perform later, once you will finish the upgrade. But you should do the SPAU in 14days after finishing the upgrade because then you will not need any access key.

for more information, you can check SAP 485741.

Thanks

Sunny

Eli ,

You can run Prepare on the system to be upgraded , that would give you an estimation on the SPDD and SPAU objects to expect. SPAU and SPDD once done could be transported to subsequent systems.

If you choose preconfiguration mode standard resource use or high resource use,SPDD happens during production operation. If you choose preconfiguration mode low resource use, they are adjusted during downtime before the ABAP Dictionary is activated.

SPAU should be done within 14 days after the upgrade completes(to avoid prompt of sscr key)
