Unstable Word file from CR report export

Former Member

It seems like Word is often crashing when editing word-files that has been created from a Crystal Reports report export. Has anyone else experienced this and do anyone know of any fix? It seems like other word files (not created from the CR export) works fine on the same PC.

In my experience, editing after WORD export is indeed problematic.

It is sometimes better to create a WORD template file and insert data from the report into that template. You can automate this using at least one of the 3rd-party Crystal tools listed here.

Hi Ido

Thanks for your comment. I will try to check this out.

Also, fyi, I just found that it looks like if I save the *.doc file to *.docx format and check the option "Maintain compatibility..." in the Save As dialog, then file size is reduced and I have a stable file (if I save just to *.docx without this option, formatting is lost).

Thanks again,

Runar

Hi Runar,

There are differences between "MS Word 97-2013" export (not edible) and "Rich Text Format" export options. You can test with a simple report file (just put only field into the report at any place, and export in into each 2 formats -> if you check them in notepad, you may notice the difference).

Can you please try to export to "Rich Text Format" and test, that formatting is ok?: or If you edit the file, it is also crashes? Currenlty i do not have the answer for docx export, i need to check.

Best Regards

I will try the RTF option, but for now it looks like I have a solution/workaround.

Thanks,

Hi, If you export from CR2016 in editable format for WORD you can use the option "MS Word 97-2013 editable" or Rich Text Format export Formats.

Which export format do you have this problem? What is the real issue facing with, eg word dumps? Which Export format do you use from these above?

Best Regards,

János

Hi Janos

I use "MS Word 97-2013" export (not edible) which seems to give the same file as the RTF option. I want a word file to look the same as in the report, and it is only minor editing that is needed (setting in content file, making some comments, adding some graphics). The file size is approx 50 mb.

Do you know if there are any plans to make a docx export from CR in future? If the *.doc file in word is saved as a *.docx file the file size is heavily reduced, however sometimes a lot fo formatting is also lost but sometimes not.

Thank you,

Runar
