Is there a way to increase the number of characters (character limit) for the memo/remarks field (in journal entries)?

No way to increase the size, it is a standard field ....
What you could do would be to generate some user field, however, this field does not replace the field that you mention in the reports

By system design, this field has maximum 50 characters in length only. There is no way to increase it without problem. I am afraid you need create UDF for your goal.
