Hello Experts,

When we change any parameter in RZ10,we need to take restart of SAP server for reflect its effect.

My question is why do we need to take restart of the application server for reflecting effect.

I wanted to know about the back end process for this .?

Best Regards,

Not all parameters need a restart of the instance to get them activated in the system. The ones flagged as "Dynamic Parameter" can be modified from Tx RZ11 and will be activated during the run time once you modify the parameter value in Tx RZ11. This is a temporary setting as the system will go back to the original value after a system restart unless you modify the parameter in the profile. Modifications done through Tx RZ11 will not update the parameters in the profile at the OS level. Profiles are read during the startup of the instance and initialised and no longer after the instance is up and running. Certain parameters cannot be dynamically changed because the kernel reads such parameter values during the instance startup and hence will not let you modify it during the run time or does not consider the new values until the instance is restarted (As per application design). It is not just the NetWeaver products but other databases, Java apps and operating systems work in the same way.

Hello Junaid,

If the parameter can be changed dynamically, you can set it at RZ10 first (so the new value is used if SAP is restarted in the futre) and to avoid the need to restart SAP, you can also change it in RZ11.

If the parameter is not flagged as "dynamically switchable" (RZ11 shows this), then the only option is to set it at RZ10 and restart SAP.

This is how it works / how it is designed.

Hello Junaid,

What tool are You using for the parameter change?
If it is an offline tool like Configtool or Telnet, the changes only take effect after restarting the instance or cluster depending on what level You made the changes.

If it is an on-line tool (NWA) the changes takes effect immediately.

If You are modifying profiles, You will need to restart the sapstartsrv service, in this case the regular restart won't validate the changes You made.

2597787- Changes in instance/default profile do not take effect after instance restart
