Query: SWU3 (Number range)

Dear All,

Can any one explain the purpose of 'Check number ranges' in SWU3. SAP help says that this checks whether there is a number range for workflow tasks (WF) and customer tasks (T). Where do we define the number ranges. I know we can define the prefix numbers. Is number range different?
