background step is in 'In Process' Status for a long time

Hello Friends,

I have a workflow in the system designed to send the Notifications and SMS to multiple user BP's mail and contact numbers.

It is simple workflow, first step is Background step which gets the mail ids and Contact number details of the eligible BP's based on the few business logic(User country, regioin and IBase details in the CSR (instance of an object type BUS2000116) user is subscribed to ).

This is steps was working fine till yesterday morning from past three months and suddenly it is in status "In Process" from past 19 hours.

What could be the reason ? These notifications are very important for all the users and more than 2000 users are not received notificaton due to this step is not executed.
