SAPGUI - general deployment options

We are revaluating or deployment of SAPGUI in preparation for the release of SAPGUI 7.2 and our own planning for a Windows 7 enterprise upgrade. Our company is heavily invested in a centralized deployment infrastructure. SAPGUI has historically been one of the more problematic applications in this regard.

Based on this experience, we are looking at the native front end installation server from SAP. SAP seems to push this VERY hard. However, we have several concerns and would be very appreiative of any direct experiences that might be relevant -

Among our concerns:

(1) Overlap with already existing application deployment infrastructure and processes. There is a reluctance invest any resources on a specialized "deployment" infrastructure when we already have one set up across the enterprise.

(2) Technical resource requirements. We have a small and relatively inexperienced central SAP (sysadmin) support team and are wondering how technically challenging it would be to set up the installation server

(3) Ongoing managment, maintenance, and support. One of the main benefits of our current centralized deployment process is that it is managed by that area and is tied in with active directory - both users and workstations. If we were to move to the SAP installation server it is not clear if (or how) it could be so easily administrated. Does the installation sever integrate with active directory or dow we have to manage users and workstations?

Again, any firsthand experience would be truly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff Henke
