I have raised an idea that allows you to delete only specific reports rather than all of them. If you would like to support this please vote here...

discosteve tammy.powlas3 In our case the button was not working for non-admin users.
I found out that the recently opened workbooks are kept in AppData:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\SAP AG\SAP BusinessObjects Advanced
Analysis\xlsRecentWorkbookList.xml
erase the file, rename the file, etc. if AFO cannot find it, it cannot load the recently opened files list.
Still, why "Delete Recently Used" button doesn't work, remains unanswered..
P.s. same story for datasources as in the question: the file is "xlsRecentDataSourceList.xml"
