Suppress Embedded Blank Field Blank Lines not working in CRforVS 2013 SP23

In our C# application we currently use Crystal Report Viewer 2008 as we had issues with cr2013 SP18 last year when we tried to upgrade. I'm now looking at upgrading to 2013 again with the latest SP(23) so going through our bug reports from last year and one I have doesn't seem to be fixed in CR 2013 SP23.

Basically the Suppress Blank Lines option doesn't appear to work in 2013. When we open the report in our application that uses the 2008 run time, it looks fine.

When we view the TEST report in 2008 it looks like this:

When the same report is opened in the application using the CR 2013 SP18 and now SP23 run time it looks like this:

As you can see the 3rd line is visible in the 2013 version, but not in the 2008 version. Nothing in the report has been changed.

I'm not a CR user/designer, but apparently the creator of the report just ticks a box and CR should just suppress the blank lines. Note that AAA, BBB, DDD, EEE are all variables.

Does anyone have any idea why this isn't working in the C# Crystal 2013 Viewer, but it works fine in 2008. ?

FYI, we are not going to change it back, that would cause the logic to break for the original issue.

We are looking into changing it for a single field though...

Hi Alan,

After talking with our product owner, we think the request from other customer is not so reasonable, we will change it back as your expectation.

Thanks

Chris

Hi Alan,

This is Chris from IMS development team, the issue you saw has been modified as current because of customer's request, following is the reason that why the behavior is changed. we think it is better to display the line because there maybe useful information to the customer when the last field is empty.

"if the last field on the line returns nothing, then the line should still be displayed because the previous database fields on the same line, or text on the same line is displaying information."

Thanks

Chris

Hi Alan,

Perfect, thank you for the 3 examples. I discussed with the CR Designer Nexus and agree the logic is not correct.

They did do a fix according to this KBA: ( use Google and search for it )

1918711 - Text Object option “Suppress Embedded Field Blank Lines” suppressing more than expected in Crystal Reports

I believe what R&D did when they fixed it for multiple fields in a text object they did not exclude static text, which is wrong for s single field instance or even when multiple fields are used and they are blank, static text is still shown.

So not sure who you reported this to last time but this time we should be able to get the fix done properly.

This new issue is now reported in this Incident:

Incident 565217 / 2018 / Suppress Embedded Field Blank Lines also looks at static text and does not suppress

Until R&D has a look at it I don't know what patches it will get into. It's core report formatting so what ever patch it does get into it should be in SP 25, it's too late for a fix in SP 24 now.

Thanks again

Don

Hi Don.

Many thanks for confirming this. I've not reported the issue before now, when our client reported it to us last year we were already rolling back our application to CR 2008 so wasn't an issue, but now we're looking at using CR2013 SP23 as that appears to fix the issues we had.

I'll update our bug reporting system with the information above. Thanks again.

Don.

I've just had a meeting with my manager and he asked when SP25 is due out. I wasn't sure on your timings but I think you release every 3 months. Can you confirm some sort of ETA for SP25.

I think he's wanting to know if we should update our application to SP23 now or wait until SP25 is out.

Thanks

Hi Alan,

Ah, too bad you didn't report it, it would have been fixed by now...

SP 25 won't be out until spring 2019 some time, no date set yet since SP 24 has not been released.

You could add conditional suppression on the text as well, that can get you by until SP 25 and allow you to update to SP 23.

A developer has been assigned the case so I pinged him to see where it needs to be fixed.

SP 24 is due out in 2 weeks if you want to wait until then also.

Just a few bug fixes and OS and ODBC 17 driver supportability/updates. As well as Remote Desktop 2016 and Citrix using the Servers default printer rather than the work station default printer properties.

Thanks again

Hi Don,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, I've been off work for the past week. I've 7zipped 3 reports all showing the problem with slight tweaks to see if I can get around it, but no luck.

I've uploaded the reports to "https://uploadfiles.io/" and it's set for 30 days before it deletes them, hopefully this is good enough for you.

Many thanks.
