If you want to encrypt SAP GUI communications at the application layer then you need to use SNC with an SNC cryptographic library from SAP or a partner company. Of course, you can encrypt network traffic using a VPN or other network encryption product, but this will encrypt everything, not just SAP GUI communications.
When SAP GUI communications are encrypted using SNC, the encryption will be end-to-end, e.g. between SAP GUI software and the ABAP AS.
