Isolating the Central Instance

I am preparing to upgrade our production system from R/3 4.7 to erp 6 ehp4. Just before the downtime the upgrade program says to isolate the central instance.

In the "Troubleshooting and Administration" guide, starting on page 51 it explains how to do this. The problem I'm having is that on page 52 step 7 indicates to "shut down all application servers, if necessary (secondary SAP instances)."

Our Central Instance does not have any BGD processes, they are all on the Application server as recommended by SAP during an early watch session. If I shut down the app server, the upgrade program will not have any BGD processes to work with.

So, do I:

1. Leave the app server running?

2. Add BGD processes to the CI and shut down the app server?
