Is it recommended to change the ITEM GROUP of a REUSABLE ITEM before reusing it?

Hi, Everybody

BACKGROUND INFO

My company is engaged in a very special type of business: we undertake to look for any goods that a client needs, purchase the goods for the client, and then sell them to the client.

This means we can buy and sell practically everything that is available on the local market (practically anything that you can imagine!)

It will be impossible to assign a "standard item code" to every item that we but and sell.

We also intend to use the Document flow model of SAP B1 to follow all stock items from A - Z (from Sales Order to Sales Invoice).

One possibility is to use REUSABLE CODES. Once we have fulfilled a particular Sales Order (i.e. all transactions A - Z completed), another user can use the same code for a new Sales Order.

MY QUESTION

When we reuse a REUSABLE CODE for another project, it is possible that the code may be reused for an item which has different parameters (different Item Group, different UoM, etc).

Note that correctly specifying the Item Group is very important because we intend using GL Account Determination based on Item Group. So, if we change the Item Group, transactions concerning the particular item will be posted to different accounts (Sales, COS, Stock accounts).

We could write SDK code to help users modify Item Group or UoM on the Item Master Data.

But Our real concern is this:

If we change the Item Group or UoM, is this going to be a problem?

Will this affect previous reports based on the previous Item Group?

Let's say I generate a set of reports before changing Item Group for a certain reusable code. Will I get the same reports immediately after I have changed the Item Group?

In a nutshell: Is it recommended to change the Item Group of a REUSABLE ITEM before reusing it?

Or should we create separate REUSABLE CODES for separate Item Groups?

Thanks

Leon

    Hi Leon,

I would recommend using separate item codes per item group, because when you run a report by item group, it will use the current item group, not the one determined when the document was posted. In other words, item group data is not preserved in documents.

As for the UoM, I would recommend to use a separate reusable item code for each UoM. So one for quantity, one for weight, one for length, etc. In this respect you can combine this with the principle I put forth in my answer to your other question.

    Regards,

    Johan

One thing more transaction GL are according to Item Groups so always create new item groups in such scenarios

    Hi, Abdul

    You are right.

I must create one series of reusable codes for each Item Group.
