How to create a product group

Praveen
Dear,
You can create it through MC84 or MM01 with material type PORD then add prduct through MC86.

Hi
In MC84 I have given the description ,plant , unit of measure and selected the materials radio button
now added the materials and saved it-Product group 1
In MM01 Selected the material type as productgroup and created it and went to MC86 added the materials-Product group 2
But now when i have checked the two product group in mm03 product group 1 does not have basic data where as product group 2 have basicdatas
Why is this so ??? (product group can be created either by MC84 or MM01then why is this difference)
If i have created the product group via MC84 what woulb be the impact in planning and transfer to demand mangement?
Regards
Praveen
Praveen,
When you are creating the product group using MC84 transaction, in the background it calls MM01 transactions but with just MRP views.
Whereas when you are creating with MM01 transaction you can select the available views as defined for the material type "PROD" (in transaction OMS2), so you may end up creating additional views which are not really required.
To your question on whether this would Impact any other planning process, then the answer is it will NOT affect any process.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply now i got how MM01 and MC84 is linked ,
one more final question,
In MM01 i have an option of selecting the industry sector but where as in MC84 i dont have option of selecting the industry sector ,
by default it is coming as Mechanical engg for the product groups created by MC84 .
Is this will have impact if i create some product group by mm01(selecting some other industry sector) and some product groups by mc84
is there any tcode to convert the industry sector ???
Thanks & Regards
Praveen
Praveen,
This is a standard SAP Behaviour when you create a Product group using MC84, industry sectory would be default picked up as "Mechanical" - M.
There is absolutely no problem due to this, basically the Industry sector would be used to define if any addition views or specific fields needs to be used in the material master. For a Product group irrespective of the Industry sector the views and fields are same so no Issues.
If this cleared all the doubts, you can close this thread. Any new questions please open a new thread.

Prasobh
Hi Praveen,
Product groups are basically used till SOP planning, but when you want to operationalise your plan through demand management, transfer your Product group plan into PIR based on the proportional factors to the relevant materials and then execute MRP.
Try using transactions - MC71, MC72 and MC73
See this link it is useful to understand Product groups -

Dear Praveen,
Create a material using material type PROD using MM01 and then assign the members in MC86 and goto MC81
for creating the plan.
