We are a small water treatment solution provider. The core of our business is fabrication and assembly of custom-designed / customer- specific Reverse Osmosis water treatment system. The assembly of these custom-made machine is a project that could last for 16-20 weeks.
We are based in Dubai, UAE but we sourced our major components overseas. For this reason , we procure the components of our custom-made machine on demand basis and work on long lead time. Procurement of these long lead items could commence prior to the detailed design of the machine. Because our machine are customer-specific, all components undergo a rigorous approval process. Some components will also need to be procured after customer approval.
Because of the tight delivery schedule, production process could commence simultaneously with the Design and Procurement. While our Engineers work on the detailed design of the machine, our Production Team are already working on the machine structure. Customer approval of the components may also happen on staggered basis, hence our Engineers will need to update the design every now and then, without halting production. Finally , once the machine is completed , this will be delivered, installed and commissioned at customer site. The installation could happen weeks after delivery, while commissioning could happen after several months. These custom-made machine comes with warranty of average 18 months. Hence, we also need to track warranty claims and handle service related to the machine. The project could also include loose items installed at customer site and / or 6-months spare parts and consumables for the machine.
It is worth noting that due to the client, site requirement, parts availability with vendors and consultant’s demand, the design, procurement and production of our machine is subject to be changed from the beginning of the project until the final delivery. In this case, the design is not expected to be fully completed prior to commencing procurement and production.
To summarize our requirement:
Please let us know how we should handle our process.
Thank you Venkatesh, This document looks great! We will see if this works and let you know!

Hi C Molina,
I tried to attempt a solution for your business case. I would suggest you to map only Project management & not Manufacturing in SAP ByD. I think your business falls in Plant Engineering, Installation & Commissioning and not a discrete manufacturing (or any type of manufacturing).

Hi Venkatesh,
Thank you again for putting up the document . My other concern is that if we map our process to the project management, how do we handle the delivery of our final product? Also, the final product will have a warranty of its own. How do we create a delivery note that states only the RO system/ plant and register the same product for warranty purpose.
Hi Molina,
1) Final Product can be a virtual product need not have inventory valuation or 2) Final Product can be an Entitlement
Regarding the delivery note, there may be an option if we juggle around the project structure and the reports. Also i believe you can differentiats task with Registered Product & Others using extension fields

Thanks Anant,
However, the blog did not answer how we should handle the progressive design, procurement and simultaneous production. If we follow the 3rd scenario for customer-specific products, we should be able to amend the production model at any stage of production. Further, we should be allowed to procure long lead components prior to the product design is finalized. Our business model follows a concept of an Engineering project, where you release the design for the skeleton of the plant first, then start building on it. Then, the design for the mechanical components are release, then start working on the mechanical assembly of the product. The design of the electrical components are release, then do the electrical assembly and so on.
I will appreciate your inputs.
Thank you.

Carmela
