Backup in Windows 2008 server

Hi All,

We are using Windows 2008 server and MS SQL 2005 db. Can we take a tape backup in MS SQL 2005 without using any third party s/w.

I have take an tape backup of SQL db in Windows 2003 OS. but in windows 2008 OS am not able to take the backup. the tape option in backup device is greyed out / disabled. I heard that in windows 2008 server tape backup is not supported and you have install a third party s/w.

Has anyone take a backup without any third party s/w in windows 2008 server and MS SQL 2005 environment. Please help me out.

If your tape device is supported by Windows 2008 - yes.

If the option to write to the tape is grayed out then the tape was not correctly detected and/or drivers are missing.

Hi Markus,

Thanks for your reply. The drivers have been installed properly. Tape drive is detected in Device Manager perfectly.

Microsoft says that if Windows Backup Feature is installed still it does not support tape backup. Please go through the given below link:

I would like to know has anyone taken a tape backup in Windows 2008 server with MS SQL 2005 DB.

you're right - yes.

According to various forum discussions the answer is simple: it's not possible without a third party tool.
