Import personal files and Inbox from BO 6.5: how?

Former Member

Hi to all,

we've observed that in our migration from 6.5 to XI 3.1 we've "lost" the personal documents and the inbox of the users. I've found on the net this guide:

http://help.sap.com/businessobject/product_guides/boexir31/en/xi3-1_bip_importwiz_en.pdf

Which states:

On the Import Wizard machine, map the drives to the source environment

directories containing the deployment's .key files, personal documents,

categories, and users' Inboxes:

u2022 $INSTALLDIR\locData for access to 5.1.x .key files

u2022 $WISTORAGEDIR\user if you are importing personal documents and

categories

u2022 $WISTORAGEDIR\mail if you are importing the read content of users'

Inbox folders

u2022 $INSTALLDIR\nodes\<nodename>\<clustername>\locdata for access to

6.x .key files

u2022 $INSTALLDIR\nodes\<nodename>\<clustername>\storage\user if you

are importing personal documents and categories

$INSTALLDIR\nodes\<nodename>\<clustername>\storage\mail if you

are importing the read content of users' Inbox folders

What does this mean? I really don't understand how I should "map" this folders...

Thanks

Daniele

Got it, after reading, but still confused: I can import the Inbox, but not any of the Personal Documents.

Weird.

You can import Inbox and Personal Documents. in 6.5 those stored on file system , not in the repository.

Personal docs are in /Storage/User/<user name> and Inbox docs in /Storage/Mail/<user_name>

So when importing to XI, you have to provide path to following locations :

/Storage/User/ and /Storage/Mail/

You also have to import the users, because tht's how import wizard does it, it import user then goes to /Storage/User/<that username> and pulls all the docs it finds there.

Now, if you're running IW on a client machine, that client machine has to be able to connect to those directories. You have to either map a drive to them or copy those 2 locations localy.

Hi Denis,

thank you for your kind answer: I've been able to import the Inbox in a test environment, but I've got some other questions:

1) Is there any way to import the documents without the users? Because we've already migrated everything else, users have already started to work on it, and we cannot override their options/logins

2) Still, even if I set the Personal Documents folders correctly, I can't load anything, while I saw that there are some users with personal documents...many...:)

Answer to # 1 is NO. You have to have users, otherwise Import Wizard doesn't know what to import, as you know there is no options to pick which Inbox or Pers docs to import, it's all or nothing and the user name is the main ingridient here.

Another option is to publish all those reports to repository and migrate them from there.... but it's way too much work.

I'd survey users and ask them for reports they absolutly have to have to be published to repo.

I'm not sure why you can't bring in personal docs. Open an Incident on this with support, so it can be investigated. It should work.

If I recall my 6.x correctly, there was never any Personal Folders in it. There were personal categories. If you select those in Import Wizard, it should work.
