Kernel question regarding PAM

Just doing an upgrade path document and looking at the PAM of EHP6 for ECC for Microsoft SQL and Microsoft server, I only see kernel versions 7.20_EXT, 7.21 _EXT,7.22_EXT listed in the PAM. All kernels are supported until 31.12.2020.

Since ERP 6.06 is Supported to 2025, all Microsoft products beyond, where could I find information for the kernel if not moving off of EHP6? Yes I know, do an EHP upgrade for a newer netweaver doc, however this is a rust out study.

Statement from SAP.

Hi Joshua

Many thanks for your patience,

1.If I look at the PAM for EHP8, ECC6 for a Microsoft OS/DB, I continue to see kernels supported until 31.03.2020 while both ERP 6 EHP 6-7-8 all are supported until 31.12.2025

A-->Yes as per PAM kernel ( 7.21 / 7.22 ) is supported till 2020 but ECC is supported till 2025. This means that in future maybe SAP will add in more kernel versions which will be supported with ECC EHP 6/7/8. Strangely we don’t know which ones!

2.If a customer stays on ECC6, EHP6 that consists of NW 7.31 and kernel.721_EXT or 722_EXT until the end of mainstream support of ECC 6.06 until 31.12.2025, what advice does SAP offer in terms of a supported Kernel version that works with this scenario until ECC EHP6 expires?

A-->We recommend to use the kernel listed in the PAM which would be 7.21/7.22 as they are supported till 2020. Now what happens next post 2020 ? We will notify you when and how the kernel changes and which will be the newer versions of supported kernels.

Please provide your direct contact number so that in case we need to have a discussion on this issue incase you need more clarity. Do mention the time you are available also.

Regards,
Ramesh.

I'm still waiting on an official statement from SAP. They escalated my ticket to second level, but that's it so far.

>>If its supported until Jan 1 2026, what Kernel will SAP support using from 2020 to 2026 on a ERP 6.06/NW731 system?<<

They will probably extend the support for kernel 7.22 EXT until 2027 or roll out kernel 7.53 for the SAP systems running on older NetWeaver releases as long as the OS and DB are supported. I don't think there will be a new release of kernel for systems based on NetWeaver 7.31

Nice to see you around again, I much preferred the old style forum we had, I found it much easier to use.

So I contacted SAP for a statement.

Kernel 7.53 is downward compatible to NW 7.4 SP2 (ABAP).

However, EHP6 for ERP6 resides on NW 7.31.

If its supported until Jan 1 2026, what Kernel will SAP support using from 2020 to 2026 on a ERP 6.06/NW731 system?

Waiting to hear. I can't speculate in my documents.

I will post what SAP replies to me. My guess they try and certify NW7.31 for Kernel 7.53.

Hello,

I doubt whether 7.53 will downported to NW 7.31. Reason being as of 7.4x onwards there is a change from architectural standpoint. As of now the most logical speculation would be that the support for 7.21/7.22 would be extended.

Hello Joshua,

As per the PAM the MSSQL is supported upto 2027( DB) , windows server 2016 is also till 2027 ( OS).

The kernel is last supported till 2020.

So this means you can use MSSQL + windows server till 2027 and depending on SAP releases for kernels whether the maintenance period for 7.22 will be increased or some other variant of kernel be released you can continue or use the latest available kernel as per PAM.

For all kernel related information please see the wiki
