Question on data modeling

Hi,

I have the following requirement. I am dealing with entering product related information. There is a requirement wherein a product can relate to other products. In the legacy system the user manually enters the product number and the description automatically gets populated. I would like to understand how we can model this within MDM console. I do not want to go for a flat hierarchy because there will be more 9000 entries the user has to deal with. Is there any other way this could be handled? I am using 5.5.

Regards

    Hi,

There is a requirement wherein a product can relate to other products. In the legacy system the user manually enters the product number and the description automatically gets populated

By this, i can understand two things

    1. You want to maintain relationship between the products which can be achieved using Relationships in MDM. You need to create a relationship of type Siblings in MDM Console. In Data Manager, you will get the entry created in Relationships table. Double Click on this Relationship and simply drag-drop the products you want to relate with the select product.

    2. You want to populate product description automatically but the question is from where you will get the product description? In MDM we can autopopulate fields either by using Assignments or using Calculated fields.

      Hi Ananthram

Are you having portal also as part of the solution? If yes then go with the customized solution as proposed by Manish. If solution is only based on MDM tools?GUIs then relationship tables is the way.

Unfortunately relationships cant be imported in MDM using Import manager, instead this is done only via data manager using text files or manually record wise in data manager.

For detailed steps on this plese refer to data manager reference guide.

Similarly even the syndication of the relationship tables is not supported uisng syndication mgr.

      Hope this helps.

      Best regards

    Hi Anant..

You need a portal based solution for this.

    1. You are maintaining Product and Description in 1 repository/master (say R1).

    2. To fetch these details in another repos, you need to fetch data from R1 using JAVA API's using CE7.0 Portal as UI.

    3. Interlinking in SAP MDM 5.5 is possible only using Poratl based solution.

    4. In MDM 7.1 this feture comes as a out of box solution and you can maintaing different masters in same repos and you can cross refer masters to fetch data.

    Hope it helps..
