Diff b/n placing characteristics in Rows and free Characteristics section

Hi,

What is the difference when you place Characteristics in Rows and Free Characteristics location while designing BEx query for Universe designing.??

If you place in Rows, what will be the output??

in Free characteristics , what it means??
