CL_GUI_TEXTEDIT to show the total number of characters as you type

The CL_GUI_TEXTEDIT shows the line and number of characters for the current line but we want to show the total number of characters that was entered so far including the lines above it. We need this especially when we use the auto-wrap option. We have a screen where we limit the characters to 150 and its auto-wrapping every 50 characters. Even though we put the limit of 150 as we have a constraint to accept 3 lines only from the user, they prefer that we also shows the total number of characters on the screen as they type it.

if you know the trick to do this, please let me know.

To do this you would have to go from presentation server to application server with every screen press. There doesn't seem to be an event for screen presses, and character count isn't build into CL_GUI_TEXTEDIT, so it is not possible.

The control framework provides specific tools that behave in a standard way. Your users must accept the limitation. Alternatively, you could recode your program as a web application, using webdynpro, then you could incorporate a flex component that gives you want you want.
