Viewing a report from VB6 using Crystal Report 2008

Dear,

We have bought crystal reports 2008 developer edition. We are planning to convert our 8.5 version of reports to the crystal reports 2008.

Our requirement is such that a report designed in 2008 versions should be viewable in a COM application and as well as in .Net application. We saw that Crystal Reports 11 release 2 has RDC for COM based clients. Does crystal reports 2008 have RDC? If not, is there any way to launch a report designed in crystal report 2008 from VB 6.0?

Regards,

Karthikeyan T.

The RDC was retired in CR 2008.

You can run reports created in CR 2008 in a VB 6 application that uses the RDC but there are a number of caveats:

    1) The application would have to be using CR XI release 2. The report format changed in version 9 and CR 8.5 can not read reports from CR 9 and later.

    2) You can not use any new features introduced in CR 2008 (flash objects as an example)

    3) There are features that will be difficult to run using the RDC (dynamic and cascading parameters being an example)

So, in a nut shell, yes you can do this, but:

    1) You need to upgrade your VB 6 app to CR XI r2

    2) Do not use new features of CR 2008

    3) If you decide to use CR XI r2 rather than CR 2008, use any new features introduced in CR XI r2 with caution. This is due to the fact that since version 10 or so, the RDC was considered a deprecated technology and thus updates in certain instances did not keep up with the report features introduced in later versions of CR. The RDC was retired after XI R2.

You will need to go to .NET or Java if you plan on using CR 2008.

If you want to use COM you will need to go to XI R2.
