Is it necessary to do middleware settings before integrating CRM with ECC?

Hello All

I am implementing CRM 7.0 with integration to SAP ERP, I will use the best practice to do this integration but shall I do a middleware configuration like creating R/3 site and the administration console settings or it is standard provided with CRM
