SAP CAREER ASSIST

I am working as sales support operation executive (back end process) in one of the largest manufacturing organisation in UAE. My work function mainly comprises SD and MM domains in SAP. My role covers order creation, production entry and execution of every step until the delivery of materials, pulling of the invoices, credit / debit memo creations whenever required – all using CRM and ECP in SAP. It almost covers END USER role in my SAP career.

Required kind guidance to enhance my career in SAP and assist me to choose the right path / module to qualify for a consultant profile in future.

I wrote a blog few years ago on the subject, providing a self development plan to be a Consultant. I'll recommend you to read it, in addition to the advices provided in the career space by many others, to have an understanding of what it takes to be a Consultant. The link is provided below:

Are Business Knowledge, Technical Abilities AND Soft Skills necessary ingredients to be a SAP Consul...

Even though it's an old entry, I think it can still help.

The ground reality is end users in SAP are limited to certain transaction codes and predominantly they operate with customized transactions and reports specific to your business process. Having said that, I am not sure, how far, you are comfortable with standard SD / MM process and most importantly, the basic configuration if not the entire configuration. To gain that configuration knowledge, you need to keep practicing daily for minimum 2 hours in your system. If you search in Google for configuration guide, lot of documentations are available. Take the inputs from there and sincerely practice in system. This will give you a chance to become a functional consultant after some years if not immediately.

G Lakshmipathi sir thanks a lot for your immediate advice.

I have very keen interest to build my future career in SAP. Need your kind guidance, which module should I choose considering my current work profile for future benefit. I came to know it is quite expensive and time taking to get any certification for any module. I am willing to switch to any other organisation in any of SAP user roles, side by side I will engage myself to compete the certification for consultant as early as I can. In addition, I want to know the job profiles (different user roles) in the hierarchy until someone becomes a consultant. I hope you may understand my query and guide me the right path, will be thankful to you always.

Start documenting the business processes. For example

- For what processes orders are created?

- For what processes credit note is created?

- For what department, is a particular report output taken?

Sir thanks a lot for your immediate advice. Well I am not learning any of the module until now but willing to start asap. I have very keen interest to build my future career in SAP. The customers who were using SD and CRM earlier are now moving to Hybris. Considering the trend, market needs, and your earlier experience, I think learning the new SAP Solution will be a good choice. Before investing your time and money in the formal training and certification, of the tool (which supports number of modern-day commerce, marketing, sales, & services processes), getting to know its basics can help you in deciding if you should choose the Solution to be its Consultant in future.

The openSAP platform provides overviews on many of the SAP Solutions, free of cost. I’ll recommend you the Experience SAP Hybris Solutions course to start your learning journey. Since I’ve taken this course, I can confirm its effectiveness. You may find other courses as well on Hybris and other SAP Solutions. Once you find yourself comfortable with building your profile through e-learning, the next step you can take is to subscribe to the SAP Learning Hub which is quite cheap option if you compare it with classroom / academy trainings.

The trainings will prepare you with the knowledge required to support a SAP Solution. You can then look for the Super User roles (a step next to end-user), followed by some Technical Support position, and ultimately switching to a Consultant profile. It’s a long-term plan but can help you greatly in your professional growth.

I have shared few tips on using openSAP for learning at the link provided below:

How I benefited from openSAP course, some tips to help you in your learning

Another blog which I wrote to describe the challenges of SAP Support Role may help you in understanding it better. It’s shared at the following link:

Are they serious? Yes, they are! Expectations of SAP Users from SAP Consultants in an Organization

Lastly I’ll also refer you to another blog to know how to be the BEST Consultant at the below-mentioned link:

Always comparing yourself with THAT CONSULTANT?

I sincerely hope it helps you in finding your way and planning your SAP Career better.

Hi Faisal Sir, Hope you are fine ... Well, I have started my journey in openSap already with SAP HYBRIS. Also, opted "Discovery Edition" in SAP LEARNING HUB at the beginning as it is free to learn and experience initially.

As I told before, I have been working in End-User functional role job in manufacturing co for past 5 years and willing to extend my knowledge and skills something in the field of Support / Analysis or Solution Provider in SAP. I do have basic IT skills and I am a Science Mathematics graduate.

Sorry to bother you, can you suggest me which stream OR module I should concentrate (Considering industry needs). I am quite new and very confuse to choose the field for my future. Frankly speaking, I got scared stiff when I browsed all the learning things and certification lists 🙂 (screenshot) ... But do not getting the right path to move forward. My questions may complicate you to understand and suggest something but if you provide me "OPTIONS" to choose, I will read, understand and opt wisely. Thanking you for your precious time and efforts for my queries as always.

Hi hobner.sm83

As you have interest and experience in Sales function, it’ll be easier for you to learn if you choose the SAP Products/Applications which support such processes. Earlier it was SD, now it’s CRM, and the prediction is of Hybris. If you look at the screenshot shared by you, both the CRM and Hybris are mentioned within Applications and Cloud respectively. You can choose either of them and start developing yourself with the learning and building your career accordingly.

Your earlier knowledge and qualifications may also help you in learning another interesting and valued subject i.e. Data Science. Once you have finished the Hybris course, I’ll recommend you to also attend Getting Started with Data Science. I found the concepts taught in this course related with predicting customer’s behavior which you’ll learn within Hybris course.
