SAP Stack Level and Applying Patches

Hello gurus,

I would like to know the difference between SAP stack levels and patches. We are using ECC 6.0. My questions are:

What are the SAP stacks, how do I know which stacks to apply, when and how to do it?

What are SAP patches, how to see the system's patch level and when do we need to apply patches and how do we know we need apply patches? And what are the steps?

I am really not technical and your help is really appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi,

What are the SAP stacks, how do I know which stacks to apply, when and how to do it?

Stacks are referred as SPS, a stack bundles all required components or individual patches that are already tested together and recommended to apply SPS instead of individual patch (until and unless you face some problem which requires certain components to be patched). Go to http://service.sap.com/sp-stacks , select your NW version to check the current SPS level and all. SAP recommends to always be at least 2 levels below the current level of released SPS. so you should plan it quarterly.

For SAP's planned release of support package, you should see sp-stack schedule at http://service.sap.com/ocs-schedules

What are SAP patches, how to see the system's patch level and when do we need to apply patches and how do we know we need apply patches?

Patches are fixes to SAP's s/w components that fixes the bug in the current existing program. for knowing the system

component detail, login to system, go to System -> Status. You should consider applying patches on a regular basis (quarterly or half yearly) .. but well, sometimes because of lot of testing requirement after SP upgrade, customers hesitate to apply patches so frequently and they may apply yearly!

what are the steps?

There is a SP guide which tells how to do it. go through it. it will give you the basic steps that you may require.

You can find the guide from http://service.sap.com/instguides

Debasis.

SAP Stack is the bunch of all SAP Componants released patches. Check what are are componants are installed in your system like SAP_ABA,SAP_BASIS,SAP_BW,SAP_APPL,PI_BASIS, etc.. Check there current patche level in the system.

What are SAP patches, how to see the system's patch level and when do we need to apply patches and how do we know we need apply patches? And what are the steps?

Patches means the bunch of OSS notes.

Login to SAP system & go to System>Status>In SAP System Data Click on Details buuton under Componant Version

OR

Go to SPAM t-code --> Click on Package Level under Status. You will see the currene patch level.
