Can we make a cost element not to require a CO object at the time of posting? Is there a certain type of cost element that would not require a CO posting?

If the cost element category is 1 or 11 or else 99 then co object assignment is must at the time of posting. This is because in absence of CO object you would get cost element wise cost center and revenue element wise profit center reports.

The cost element category determines which cost elements can be used for which business transactions. Check whether any other cost element categroy in the cost element master in T.code KA01/KA02 helps you.

Hello,

If you have an account which is a cost element at the same time, you must assign a CO object to this account. If you don't want to use this account with a CO object, you can delete cost element with using transaction KA04.
