I am trying to update a report stored on a business objects server that is running remotely. We have opened port 6400, and when I try to connect now, I get the following error message:
Transport error: Communication failure.
Great descriptive error message. Does anyone know what this means?
it means there was a transport error or a communication failure.... just kidding
In addition to above this could be caused by a DNS problem, product version mismatch (between client and server).
Try the FQDN and IP in the logon URL instead to verify if its DNS.
Regards,
Tim

You need to set the request port on the BO servers. Then open up the request port numbers on the firewall.
Take a look at the admin guide - specifically the "Working with firewalls" chapter
