please be more specific: What kind of variant do you mean:
- transaction variant, system variant,
- screen variant,
- query variant,
- price variant,
etc...

- query variant, parameter set for selection screen
- price variant, means differnt price set for diffent vendor & material combination

If you are using Varient then you dont have to enter the selection parameter every time to run the report.
You may create n no. of varient as per your requirment.

flow is like this...,
1. Create characteristics for the model in CT04
2. Create Class in CL02 and assign the characteristics defined above in above step.
3. Create the material with material type KMAT. and assign the class defined above in classification view.
4. Create the configuration profile in CU41. assign the settings required in the configuration profile.
5.write the dependencies required for the model and assign them.
6. you can check the model in configuration simulation screen CU50.
