printing in firefox - 3x more steps than IE

We have a website from which our clients can run all our reports. When we run our report, the report pops up in a new browser window. However, getting printouts is a real drag in Firefox.

In I.E.: After the Crystal Report appears, users only have to click the print icon on the report page and then click Print to accept the default printer.

In Firefox: After the Crystal Report appears, users click the print icon on the report page, but instead of going to a printer selection dialog box the user is prompted to either open or save a pdf version of the report. At this point they have to go through several extra steps to finally get to the printout.

It appears that it is Firefox that is generating the PDF and then handing over printing to Adobe instead of printing the report itself. Does anyone have a solution to this.

Also, it appears that when the report is printed on paper from Firefox using a MAC, the report does a print screen of the report viewer that inludes the url at the top, zoom percentage, etc. Basically, it includes stuff from outside the boundary of the actual report. The report also print a lot of blank pages in between.

Does anyone have a resolution to these problems. Thanks for your help in advance.

Not a Crystal issue

I think there's a plug-in that you need to install to get Firefox to load a PDF in a manner similar to IE - imbedded in the frame - so that the Print icon will send the document to the printer. Sorry, but I don't remember what it's called, exactly. I use Firefox on linux all the time and don't have the issue that you describe... (Although I do have an issue where the window isn't always painted when opening the document. You have to force a repaint, which I do by resizing the window, before the document and Adobe icons display. I don't know if that's a Firefox issue or Adobe issue...)

Hi Carl,

Yes, I figured there might be a plug in out there to do just that. However, a search on google turned up nothing. Let me know if you remember the name of the plugin that you use. Or you could just open up your browser, go to Tools > Add Ons > Plug Ins to find the name.

Thanks for your help. It is much appreciated.
