ArchiveLink SAPGUI requirements

We are implementing a solution to pull pdf files from FileNet for viewing in ECC. Most of the documentation I have read indicates that we can use SAP Archivelink functionality for this and it should be fully support by the standard SAPGUI.

The excerpt below from help.sap.com says that some archivelink components will be installed along with the sapgui. However, when I run the installer I do not get any options to select archivelink functionality, nor do I see any of the file systems or files that the site mentioned will be installed (such as the archlink directory). Furthermore I do not see any other mention of the need for any type of sapgui archivelink add-on in any documentation.

It seems like this information may be outdated because the page mentions the Archlivelink Viewer which has been replaced with Document Viewer.

To summarize, my question is:

Is any special installation required on the end user's workstations in order to use Archivelink in SAP, or is the standard SAPGUI installation sufficient?

Should the archlink directory and associated files mentioned on the linked webpage be included in the SAPGUI installation? If so, why weren't they created when I installed sapgui?

Here is the link and the excerpt that has led to the confustion:

Configuration of SAP ArchiveLink for Windows

SAP ArchiveLink must be installed so that it is available on all PCs where archive functionality is to be used. This is generally achieved by installing SAP ArchiveLink locally on the PCs.

Installing SAP ArchiveLink

SAP ArchiveLink is installed automatically together with the SAPGUI as part of the frontend installation.

During the installation, a directory called archlink is created. It is located under the SAPGUI directory and contains all the binaries. Then the actual installation process takes place. An entry is made in front.ini and in the registry, the initialization files for SAP ArchiveLink (archlink.ini, alviewer.ini, ixr2al.ini) and the connection module for R/2 (ixr2al.exe) are copied to the Windows directory and the OLE registration is carried out.

For further information on installing SAP Software for Windows, see the PDF document Installing SAP Frontend Software for PCs.

Archivelink is working fine with SAPGUI, no additional installation or setting was required for the SAPGUI installation.

Hi Michelle,

from my point of view there is no special installation required to use the ArchiveLink functionalities in your SAP system.

I hope this statement could be useful for you.

Christoph -

Have you used Archivelink with SAPGUI? Did your installation of SAPGUI include the archlink directory and associated archivelink files as described below?

The archiveLink directory is not a directory which is installed. Its a directory used for the exchange of data (called an exchange directory). This does not need to be installed, it simply needs to be created with the correct permissions or software in some cases if you have Filenet and SAP on different operating systems (i.e. Unix and Windows)

You might find it if you do a search for ECL viewer. In transaction OAG4 there is an option to enable its use in Archivelink.
