Upgrade Question about EEWB Enhancements

We've already upgraded our box from 4.0 to 2007 and discovered that our table extensions have remained intact. A consultant we had guiding us informed us that due to the new architecture, we would need to re-extend these tables/objects in order for them to show up in the GUI. This would involve creation of new table fields, since we couldn't reuse the old fields, and then we'd have to copy the old data from those fields into the new ones, which we could then display on the screen as needed since the EEWB would take care of the middle layer piece.

My question is can we use the EEWB to simply re-extend the tables using the same names which would then take care of all the other objects in the BOL/design layers? This would allow us to reuse the existing data vs having to copy the data to a new field. It would also simplify our upgrade project since all the custom code(*some reports, etc) we have around the custom fields would not have to be changed to reflect the new field names.

I would think this would be possible, but wanted to check with the gurus first.
