Is it a must to use Solution manager for ECC 6.0 upgrade

Is it a must to use Solution Manager for ECC 6.0 (FICO & HR) upgrade? I am told Solution Manager is required only if it has ABAP and JAVA stacks, or involves Enhancement Packages; and could be optional if it is only ECC 6.0 with ABAP stacks.

Hi,

You are not going to use solution manager system for any thing in upgrade activity except for the solman key.

the solution manager is required only to generate the solution manager upgrade key as of license.

the answer shoulb de yes, you have to install the solman system if u don have in u r landscape prior to the upgrade.

If you plan to upgrade to ERP 6.0 (EHP4), you also have to provide sapup with an enhancement package stackfile in phase EHP_INCLUSION (see also note 1022704).

For this you have to

- configure the maintenance optimizer in your solman (provide S-User for connection to SAP, etc)

- configure your sap system, which you want to upgrade in Transaction SMSY of solman (release, etc)

Unfortunately even in the upgrade guide for ERP6.0(EHP4) is printed in chapter "filling the download directory":

Support Package stack xml file ( optional )

but sapup said: "You need to include an enhancement package into the procedure"

So I would also recommend to install/configure solman BEFORE the upgrade

Hi,

I'm having a difficult time finding some guidance for setting up our R/3 Enterprise system in solman properly, so that I can create the upgrade XML file required to go directly to ERP 6.0 EHP4.

I've set up the R/3 system fine, but when i create a maintenance transaction i cannot for the life of me figure out how to tell it I want to go from r/3 to ERP6 ehp4.

Any docs out there for this?

Thanks!

I figured it out... i had to add the R/3 Enterprise logical components to my system landscape. After that I was able to select R/3 as the initial data in the maintenance transaction and then the system i wanted to upgrade, and then the option to upgrade.

Never mind!

Could someone tell me which components of Solution Manager are required for the ECC 6.0 upgrade? We do have it but is not fully installed at our company.

Hi Sabu,

There is lots of functionality in SAP solution manager. But for upgrade you need to generate the solution manager key using your solution manager system.

Just complete the installation and generate the key and perform the upgrade.Latter on you can use your solution manager for other functionality.

YES, this is mandatory or at least (and I don´t recomend this) you will need access to one Solman to generate the Key the SAPup will ask during Prepare phases. Also if by any chance you need to download any new SP or tool you will need to have Solman configured correctly because the only way to download SP´s for ECC 6.0 is using Mantainance Optimizer.

I strongly recomend you first to get your Solman Up and Running before trying you Upgrade. And what they told you is wrong, in ABAP you need the key also for Installations and upgrades.

You can also use SolMan to guide you on the SP level you need for your target upgrade level from the old current SP level, it proved very helpful rather than going through the marketplace downloading lots of CAR and SAR files.

Without SolMan you may not even get the SAP support you require.
