Patch level for upgrading to 2007A

Can you upgrade directly to 2007A SP00 PL45?

A recent thread discussed upgrading to B1 2007A. In the thread, it was said that you must upgrade to 2007A SP00 PL30 then patch to any higher level.

It is not my understanding. I think that you only have to go to PL30 first if you are doing a full re-install of B1. If you are doing a simple upgrade, then you can go directly to higher patches such as PL45.

Does anyone know of any reason why you have to upgrade to PL30 first?

The thread is:

Douglas,

On the recomendation of our SAP Partners we are planning to move from 2005A PL39 to 2007A PL45.

No mention of moving to PL 30 in between. I have already upgraded my dev system and all seems fine so far. testing due to end at the end of this week.

Thanks,

Mike

Looking at those notes and from my experience, it looks like you do not need to upgrade via PL30.

If you are using the upgrader, then you can go directly to a higher patch like PL45.

You only if you need to use PL30 if you have to uninstall B1 then re-install, because PL30 is a full install version.

You either have to upgrade to PL30 or PL47.

If your target is higher than PL30 but lower than PL47 (i.e. PL45) than you have to upgrade to PL30 first and apply the other PL patch second. PL30 and PL47 are 'upgraders', whereas the others are 'patches'.

Hi Franz,

Thanks for your reply. However, I do not think that you must go to PL30 before PL45 unless you are doing a full re-install, which I think is what you mean by an 'upgrader' version..

The reason that I started this thread was to clear up any confusion because some people obviously believe that you must go to PL30 first. The SAP upgrader supplied with PL45 will upgrade directly to PL45 (from, say, v2005) and the upgrade documentation appears to say that you can upgrade directy to PL45.

Can you tell me:

1. Why you think that you must go to PL30 before PL45 if you are allowing the patch upgrader to upgrade an existing installation?

2. Where SAP documentation says that you must go to PL30 before PL45?

Thanks.

Unfortunately, it's in German ...

and go through this (in English)

addon:

Direct upgraders are available for the following: SP00 PL42, SP00 PL47 and for SP01 PL05.

If your going to SP04 PL05, don't forget to apply the Hotfix for SP01 PL05 as well.

Thank you, Franz.

Things are becoming a little clearer.

When I looked at the patches, some patches are marked as 'Upgrade' amd some as 'Patch'. In the case of PL42 and PL45, PL42 is an 'Upgrade' and PL45 is a 'Patch'.

An 'Upgrade' is not the same as a full install set. A full install, needed if there is no B1 system on the server, has a folder called 'Server', which the patches do not.

Although there is nothing in the Administrator Guide for PL45, I found the following in the PatchReadme.pdf for PL45:

"Before running 2007 A patch 45 upgrade, customers who are running versions previous

to 2007 A should upgrade to version 2007 A patch 42."

However, I also know that some of our consultants have successfully upgraded from 2005A to 2007A SP00 PL45.

In summary, the SAP documentation tells you to go to PL42 before PL45, but the upgrader supplied with PL45 will run on a 2005A system and upgrade it to 2007A.

To cut a long story short:

SAP supported way is always using the steps as decribed. If a consultant is doing it in a different way he might risk loosing SAP support for this DB.

... your choice ...

I agree that we should use the supported procedure. I will inform our consultants what SAP advises.
