Influences of changing costing ID from B to A?

Dear expert,

our canpany uses variant configuration in sales order process. Our SAP uses Make-to-Order without sales order controlling. sales contract and sales order both have condition type EK02 to carry cost for configurable material. But, if we want to change sales configurations in the old item of sales order, EK02 can not be updated. We should manually click a calculator-like button to calculate and update cost for EK02. That's not suit for our business transaction. The reasons are: 1.Condition type EK02 should be updated automatically rather than manually. 2. Our company do not permit sales order creators to see the sales order's cost. if manual clicking and estimate cost, they can see the cost of sales orders.

I found that, there was a doubt in SPRO configuration: In requirement class 42 (used for variant configuration), costing ID is set B now. After testing, If I change costing ID from B(automatic costing) to A(automatic costing and marking), it can be updated automatically!

But, I have a question:

In SAP online help, SAP recommends that: If you calculate the variance using a standard price that was determined by sales order costing, then the sales order cost estimate should be given the status 'marked'.

I want to know why. and Will it affect "variance calculation" for production order linked to the sales order?

thanks very much.
