Print Spooler on the Business Objects Server

Is it neccessary to have a Print Spooler service running on a Business Objects server? Our server is going down (rebooting itself) lately. a typical message from our event logs just before the crashes:

Printer Driver HP LaserJet 8100 Series PCL6 for Windows NT x86 Version-3 was added or updated. Files:- UNIDRV.DLL, UNIDRVUI.DLL, HPLJ81P6.GPD, UNIDRV.HLP, hpmopyui.ini, hpoemui.dll, PCL5ERES.DLL, PCLXL.DLL, PCLXL.GPD, P6FONT.GPD, PJL.GPD, P6DISP.GPD, TTFSUB.GPD, UNIRES.DLL, STDNAMES.GPD.

Thanks,

One thing we found was that if the Business Objects Server does not have a compatible printer driver to the printer you are trying to print to, then the print spooler will spike to 100% cpu, and cause the report to not complete.

Are you trying to schedule a report directly to printer?

I think the spooler would be required if you are printing directly to printer.

Troy is correct, the print spooler is necessary for the distribution of reports directly to a printer when scheduling. If the printing is done on demand by the client then the clients local print spooler will be used.

If you need to schedule reports to this printer then:

Remove this particular print driver from the server - control panel -> printers & faxes -> server properties -> drivers -> select and delete.

Then browse to the UNC path of the printer in question and install the print driver via windows. Print off a test page. If the driver installs successfully it means windows won't try and install the driver the next time the report is scheduled to distribute to this printer.
