Maintenance track

Hi

I have a requirement to create a maintenance track . I read the blogs on creating it .But the doubt is that, Will the changes in my new track overwrite the already deployed content(deployed during the development phase) in DEV system. If yes, Is there any way that we can create a new track with the same runtime systems and continue development without altering the existing deployed version.
