Variant Config: Calculates dependency, but does not display

I have created a dependency for a characteristic (class type 012). I want to calculate a multiplication. The multiplication does seem to take place, as when i enter a value in manually - it prompts me that it is inconsistent. If i enter the correct calculated amount, no complaint. I have used the following syntax:

$SELF.ZRISK_SCORE = $SELF.ZPROBABILITY_SCORE * $SELF.ZFREQUENCY_SCORE.

Why does it calculate, but does not display the value?

Please assist ?
