Capacity leveling

Hi,

I have 2 questions on capacity leveling. I understand the concept of capacity leveling in SNP that it can be used to level the overloads and underloads.

Scenario: I have plant A with bucket resource BR1 and plant B with bucket resource BR2. I am planning the same product Prod1 at both locations and they have SNP PPMs too.

The questions are:

1. When I click on capacity leveling icon in SDP94, I get a popup where aI can select the parameters for capacity leveling. In the bottom portion is alternative resource. Can I plan on BR1 and use BR2 ( which is from plant B) as alternative resource or should it be the same?

In a case where there is a order that does not have any capacity left out in BR1 would have to moved to BR2. But they are not on same plant.

2. I have a scenario like below BEFORE CAPACITY LEVELING:

resource BR1:____________________W30__________W31_________W32__________W33

Standard available capacity_________100__________100___________100___________100

Resource capacity level in %________50___________50___________200__________100

resource BR2:____________________W30__________W31_________W32__________W33

Standard available capacity_________100__________100___________100___________100

Resource capacity level in %________100___________50___________0__________100

In this above case, I start planning with resource BR1, in week W32, if I specify max. capacity is 100, when I run standard capacity leveling only on BR1, the system would make Wk32 100 and move that 100 to Wk30 and 31 as 50 and 50.

But my question here, I want to specify BR2 as alternative resource here and want to tell the system the following

"when you are planning in a week, check the capacity in the same week in both resources before proceeding to other weeks"

Effectively this should change the picture for BR1 and BR2 like below after capacity leveling

resource BR1:____________________W30__________W31_________W32__________W33

Standard available capacity_________100__________100___________100___________100

Resource capacity level in %________50___________50___________100__________100

resource BR2:____________________W30__________W31_________W32__________W33

Standard available capacity_________100__________100___________100___________100

Resource capacity level in %________100___________50___________100__________100

Is the above scenario possible? Please let me know if I am not clear in my illustration.

Thanks.

Hi rajgaddam,

1) When I click on capacity leveling icon in SDP94, I get a popup where aI can select the parameters for capacity leveling. In the bottom portion is alternative resource. Can I plan on BR1 and use BR2 ( which is from plant B) as alternative resource or should it be the same?

System only considers production process models (PPMs) or production data structures (PDS) that produce the same location product with alternative resources. In your case, if PPM is not defined with BR2 from plant B, then it will not pick up.

2) Is the above scenario possible?

As answered in question 1, your scenario in question 2 will work only if you have PPMs. If BR2 is maintained in same location, the orders will get distributed as you defined in your query. But system will sure does capacity levelling on alternate resources within the plant.

Hi Senthil,

I appreciate you taking time to answer my question. You did not answer my question, may be I am not clear.

"Scenario: I have plant A with bucket resource BR1 and plant B with bucket resource BR2. I am planning the same product Prod1 at both locations and they have SNP PPMs too."

I said above that the PPMs are all in there.

For question1, BR1 and BR2 are not in the same plant. The question is, does the system consider alternative resource from a different plant?

For question2, please correct me if I am wrong, as standard, system does capacity leveling for all weeks in BR1 first and then go to BR2 if there is no capacity left in BR1. In my case, I need the system to check BR1 and BR2 for that week level capacity in these resources and then go into the next week.

So as per my example above, if I have 200% in week1 for BR1 and BR2 is 0% used, the system should level BR1 and BR2 for that week first making both 100% instead of standard, moving the rest excess 100% in WK1 of BR1 to other weeks of BR1 (as there is capacity left there).

I hope I am clear. Please do not hesitate to ask any more detail.

Thanks.

Hi Raj -

1) SNP capacity leveling only levels products in one location even if you have PDS/PPM at other location resources. Leveling for multiple locations is much more complex considering more variables and may force orders to be placed outside of the periods you are leveling which will not work. Within a location you can level on a single resource or multiple alternate resources.

2) When capacity leveling is run every valid alternate production resource is checked within a period before moving to the next period. So if BR1 and BR2 are at the same location and BR1 is being leveled then BR2 would be checked prior to moving to the next leveling period.

Hi Raj,

1) As I already indicated, PPMs are derived from resources. Eventhough resources are from same plant, but if alternative resource is in different plant, it will not consider. Normally, capacity levelling is carried out after heuristic to level the bucket orders as heurisitic does infinite capacity planning. Hence, during levelling, system will not look at alternative resource at different location.

2) System considers every bucket and does levelling. Once it is satisfied & fulfil the required capacity it starts filling the next bucket. During this process, it randomly starts filling up either BR1 or BR2 first and fills the orders, once it is filled it fills orders with BR2. Once BR1 & BR2 are completed fulfilled, then only it start levelling the next bucket.

Please confirm whether your query is resolved now.
