Crystal Reports Server XI R2 Backup and Restore

Dear Forum Users!

How do I best perform a Backup of my Crystal Reports Server XI R2 Environment?

What we need to do is provide our customers the means to backup their reports. They store their reports on Crytal Reports Server.

So how do I backup the CMS Repository including the - in our case - MYSQL Database and the Filestore?

I tried using the Import Assistent exporting into a BIAR File - this works fine.

But when try to import into Crystal Reports Server in my Test Environment (it is a separate installation of Crystal Reports Server, but the Same Version and even in the same drive and directory) the reports fail to import with the following error:

(Translated form German to English):

Error on handing the export object to the Target-CMS. Reason: Assigned object data could not be loaded into the file repository server:

(obj eng_ASS_AssignmentsAndHandlingPersons_en_US, id 713 ) : Error on File Repository Server: The File-URL frs:/// is invalid. Please check the format of the URL...

I only face the above problems when I try to import into a different installation of Crystal Reports Server. Whereas if I do the export - import on the same server everything works fine.

Thanks in advance for your help.

regards, reinhart herzog

Hello,

you can follow this document that includes the backup & recovery best practices for BO XI R2:

http://resources.businessobjects.com/support/communitycs/TechnicalPapers/xir2_backup_and_recovery_be...

And about the error message that you receive when you are importing on your test server.

Are you using tomcat? The error message seems to be related to the Input/Output FileStore servers.

Have you configured the xml files in the tomcat webapps? That configuration is not stored on the database, so when you restore the backup files you have to re-configure the application server configuration files (the web.xml in WEB-INF directories).

Hello Alejandro,

Thanks for your reply.

The document you mentioned is about what needs to be included for a proper backup to complete; but unfortunately not how. Referring again to the document: It is not clear to me wheter I can do my backup using the Import Wizzard or do I have to do it manually backing up the CMD Database und File Repository.

One statement on page 7 focused my interest:

For replicating on a second server, conduct the installations as above and use the Business Objects Import Wizard to import the required information from one Enterprise system to another.

Do I have to copy the FRS manually in order for the Import to work?

You mentioned Tomcat. Both of my installations are standard deployments using on both Images the same number of drives, disk space and deployment directory. Further on I am using the same ports for Tomcat. Only for the MYSQL database I am not sure, if I've used the same password for both deployments.

Does SAP Business Objects provide a documentation for the Import Wizzard explaining the backup restore procedure?

My initial goal was to try using the Import Wizzard for backup and restore and if that worked fine use the BIAR Command Line tool in order for the backup to be run automatically.

Two Questions:

- Can I do what I want with the Import Wizzard (Backup and Restore Reports, Users, Groups, and Rights on Folders)

- Can I do the same with the BIAR Command Line Tool? --> automating the backup process is a crucial and mendatory part for us.
