Hi,
We are planning to do an OS Migration from HP-UX 11.23 to Sun Solaris 10 as well as database upgrade from Oracle 9.2.0.7 to Oracle 10.2.0.4
Is there any standard rule or recommendations about the sequence to be done while doing these two activities? Is it recommended to migrate the OS before upgrading the database?
Thanks
Vijay
Hi,
Thanks for all the helpful inputs.
However, when all the instances are using one database server, if i have to upgrade the database, i will have to upgrade the database client software in it which i think will definitely conflict with other instances.
How do i go about upgrading database for each instance in this case. I couldn't find anything even in the upgrade guide about this scenario.
Thanks
Vijay

Not necessarily.
Kernel 6.40 and 6.40_EXT use the 9.2 client also to connect to a 10g database. If you want to use a kernel, that uses the 10g client, you need to update to 640_EX2. Neverless, both clients can be installed in parallel.
What Sun Solaris do you plan to use? SPARC or x86_64?
If you do the migration using R3load you don't need to touch the source system. You would
- use sapinst and R3load on the source sysetm to export the database content to an independent format
- use sapinst and R3load on the target system to load the database
The version of the database is irrelevant.

Thanks Markus.
I am initially planning to upgrade the database and see if it is consistent. Once it is successful then I will do the System Copy from HP-UX to Sun Solaris.
You were very helpful.
Thanks,
Vijay

Just to add: If you migrate (using R3load) the system, you will need to export (and so read) all tables in the system and export them. So there's no need to first do the upgrade to Oracle 10g.
And note:
For a heterogeneous migration you must have a certified migration consultant on-site, otherwise you will loose support for the target system and for problems resulting out of the migration.

Hi Vijay,
Do u mean MCOD?
Single database server and three instance.
Upgrade of the DB if you have version change then you many have to upgrade the Client with it aswell and upgrade is a process of only binary changes ( bin folder) upgrade so it will be one time upgrade.
and While upgrade it will show you the list of database instance find in it.

Vijay,
I think you should go for Oracle Upgrade first. Also you should set DB parameters according to SAP Note Note 830576 - Parameter recommendations for Oracle 10g. After this you can go for migration. before that read the sysem copy guide from https://websmp105.sap-ag.de/systemcopy
Also see below thread.
A heterogeneous system copy must be done by a certified migration consultant, otherwisein case of problems resulting out of the migration, you will loose SAP support during and after the migration . Check http://service.sap.com/osdbmigration for details.
Hope it helps

Hi,
Please Check in PAM for support first,
You can do an upgrade and proceed with the os migration also or vice versa.
As there is only change in OS migration no Db migration there should not be any much complication.
Furthere i think upgrade the DB and going for migration will be best, And please make sure you have latest kernel in place and check for correct path set and bug fixes.
Furthere Refer the link:
