rdc CrxFieldDefinition.Value is Empty for memo fields

Using RDC, section formatting event, I can get the value of other field types, but memo fields return an empty value.

Is there a way to get the value of a memo field?

note: I know I can read the memo field into a formula and use the formula instead. However, my use scenario doesn't allow that.
