Converting garbled characters for JAPANESE characters in a custom table

Hi all,

I have a custom table that store Japanese characters.

After my company has upgraded to ECC6.0, this data in the custom table has become garbled and its alot of it garbled.

Is there any SAP tool that can I use to make the correction on those garbled Japanese characters?

Thanks,

William Wilstroth

Hi William,

ok, then my description was correct. You can also check this via SAP note 928909.

I think it is really worth getting the according authorizations for SUMG ( I am not sure why you are referring to SCP ...).

Regarding DBTABLOG:

In general, the content of this table is not converted during a Unicode conversion (as you can see in SAP note 514967). This is an advantage for your situation, since the data within this table does not need to be repaired (However you have to apply SAP note 1042842 - since you had a 'hidden' MDMP system ) ...

Considering this, it would be possible to adapt the wrong content via comparison with DBTABLOG manually - but the repair via SUMG will be probably faster and easier ...

Hi William,

you can repair data via transaction SUMG.

Please have a look at the UC conversion guide attached to SAP note 551344 (UCG700* --> 4.2.4 Manual Repair).

Make sure that you choose the correct languages for the repair.

Hi Nils,

Very good reference you had given me there...! ThankS!

However, those zipped UCG guides attached 551344 can't be open... it has error said... path not found...after it downloaded halfway...

Thanks,

William

Hi William,

which one did you try to download ? I tested the download of some guides and it worked ...

Maybe there was a problem with the network ?

Hi Nils,

I really really really had a field day reading and testing around UC... To my dissappointment, I do not have the authorization to use SUMG and SCP too as well as a few of the TCODES...

I finally told my higher level technical mgnt. that this table might need some changes...

Has this problem of mine got anything to do with MDMP since its no longer supported in ECC6 and I found one coding that search for MDMP in RSVTPROT...

My colleagues suggest that the data be corrected from table DBTABLOG... which i find, in my opinion, is not the right way...

Thanks,

William

Hi William,

sorry, maybe I misunderstood your problem ...

My assumption was that your system was converted to Unicode as a single code page system and then afterwards you found out that some Japanese characters have been converted incorrectly ...

Is this assumption correct ?

Yes, your assumption is correct!

Will it required additional steps to correct my data?

Thank you Nils for helping me up until today!!!

Hi Nils,

Thanks!!! I finally had the chance to see SUMG how it looks like for the first time with the help of Basis...

Ok you got one solid point!!!

My functional and me has written to Basis Team to get further authorization to use SUMG to fix the table.

Hopefully, the dept will approve my SUMG and everything will go smooth.

THanks again!!!

Hi William,

one additional comment from my side:

Please note that this is not the standard way to handle such case.

In my opinion, if Japanese data exists in one table, there is a high probability that other tables contain also Non-Latin-1 data ...

Therefore the normal way would be to at least check it via SPUMG and then convert the system as MDMP - this would avoid repairing the data afterwards (you can restrict the tables scanned by SPUMG via exception list). This is especially valid, if there is a high amount of data.

Hi Nils,

Thanks again for your advice... Currently, I am no longer handling this issue anymore because senior dev team has taken over citing it as a non UNICODE issue.
